OBIT - MICKEY ROONEY

Mickey Rooney, one of Hollywood's most beloved actors, died yesterday, Sunday the 6th of April, at age 93. A child star in the 1930s, he thus enjoyed one of the film industry's longest and, at its peak, most successful careers. Born Joseph Yule Jr. in Brooklyn, NY, his big break came when he played his most popular character, Andy Hardy, in 1937's A Family Affair - the first of 15 Andy Hardy films; in 1939, he and Deanna Durbin were honoured with a special Juvenile Academy Award. He managed the transition from child star to adult actor as well as any in the business, though his fortunes began to wane through the 1960s and '70s. Rooney continued to work right up to his death, however. Having been married eight times, he is survived by his separated wife, Jan Chamberlin, and his nine children.
