I'm not sure any anthology film could ever achieve overall greatness. It seems too tricky a task - every individual segment needs to achieve it, and so they also do in cumulation (you think it's pretentious to note the order curator in the trailer? Actually, it is). But that's never going to stop me from wanting to see them, and Words with Gods looks like a particularly intriguing project, purely due to the talent behind the camera. At the very least, these short forms allow for filmmakers to excise all of the excess that can make creating a feature-length work of their own such a difficult task, and thus that individual greatness isn't so often such a distant goal. Guillermo Arriaga has a big thing for high-minded spiritual narratives spanning nations and disparate storylines, so he'll be right at home with this, as noxious as his stuff can be.
