Miyazaki Hayao is far from the most prolific of directors, but the infrequency of his films in recent years only encourages us to treasure them even more. And there's so much to treasure, not least the sumptuous animation design in each and every one of them. Few, though, feature such ambitious, intricate, dazzling animation as his 2004 film Howl's Moving Castle, which ranks as my favourite animation of the last ten years. Drawing on the inspiration of Diana Wynne Jones' novel, Miyazaki's concepts are exquisitely brought to life by his first-rate animation team, with beautiful interiors such as Howl's bedroom and cave, and the exterior of his castle, and trademark Miyazaki backdrops such as stunningly-coloured skies and landscapes. Just another reason why the world of cinema will miss his contribution as he retires from filmmaking.
