10 YEARS AT THE MOVIES: BEST FILM #9 - THE WHITE RIBBON (MICHAEL HANEKE)

Michael Haneke's disquieting The White Ribbon was a film of such indubitable stature that not even former Haneke leading lady Isabelle Huppert could deny it the Palme d'Or at Cannes, despite speculation that she mightn't want to court claims of favouritism. Stunningly photographed in austere monochrome by Haneke regular Christian Berger, and performed by an unforgettable ensemble of youths and adults, this intelligent, allegorical film is the great German filmmaker's masterpiece to date. Unquestionably one of the finest films of the last ten years, and one of the cinematic gems from one of the timeframe's very best years, 2009. A film that will be written about for years to come.
