10 YEARS AT THE MOVIES: BEST PERFORMANCE #4 - SANDRA HULLER (REQUIEM)

Roles don't come more dense with drama than those of the supposedly demonically-possessed. And films about such persons don't normally come with the level of restraint and empathy that Hans-Christian Schmid infuses into Requiem. Sandra Huller - at the time, effectively a complete unknown, and even today the star of nothing of such note - gives one of those performances so rich in detail, so vivid, so thorough that it would be almost an impossibility not to be enraptured by the film. There's not even the slightest suggestion of study in her expression, in her voice, in her mannerisms - it's intensely, frighteningly realistic. This is acting of the very finest quality. Huller won the Silver Berlin Bear for Best Actress in the role of Michaela.
