10 YEARS AT THE MOVIES: BEST SOUND - DANIEL BRUYLANDT AND LUC THOMAS (AMER)

Whether or not your tastes extend as far left of field as the films of Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani, you've got to admit that their films are gorgeously designed. The visuals are breathtaking, but of equal quality are the soundscapes to their works, and best of all is the sound design in their 2009 debut Amer. Vividly ratcheting up the intensity of this most sensual of films, an abstract but highly potent exploration of female sexuality, the film combines outstanding sound editing and a hypnotic mix to create one of the most memorable uses of sound in any film that I can think of. Cattet and Forzani's films display not only a great respect for the giallo traditions they're updating, but that same respect for cinema as a whole.
