When Atom Egoyan was announced to be making a return to Cannes with his new film a few weeks back, some (including myself) speculated that this might signal a return to form for the Canadian auteur. According to critics who've seen that new film, Captives, at Cannes, that is not the case. It was booed, reportedly even more than already-notorious festival opener, Grace of Monaco on Wednesday. I wonder if the booing was led by the most high-profile print critics, whose published responses to the film are the most scathing. Not all are in agreement that the film is a total dud (though most do agree that Kevin Durand's performance as the paedophile captor indeed is), but the overall impression of the reviews is that this is yet another disappointment from a once-genius.
