Trailer for Alice Rohrwacher's The Wonder, which is one of only two films by women to feature in the upcoming Cannes Film Festival main competition. After Corpo Celeste, it's the second of Rohrwacher's two films to premiere at Cannes, and it'll open in Italy on the 22nd of May. You'll notice Alice's sister Alba in the trailer. This is the kind of early-career, low-key film (from a filmmaker who's not a white man) that I wish they'd show more of in competition at Cannes. I mean, last year's Un Certain Regard had The Missing Picture, Stranger by the Lake and Norte, the End of History, alongside films from seven women, while the main competition had Jeune et Jolie and one film by a woman.. Many might have expected The Wonder to show in a sidebar this year, and it won't. Hooray for Alice Rohrwacher!
