Zeitgeisty drama Spring Breakers is to receive a sequel. Harmony Korine's film was both wholly expected from the provocative filmmaker, and wholly unexpected, and it was as overrated upon release as it was underrated. I'm not sure how I feel about a sequel being commissioned, since it doesn't seem like the worst film to bestow a follow-up, but perhaps Korine's film would be better left alone. The choice of director - Jonas Akerlund - is apt (he's in with that crowd) on one hand, and alarming (he's not very good) on the other. The choice of writer - Irvine Welsh - is apt (he knows the party-hard scene) on one hand, and alarming (he's untested in contemporary American youth culture) on the other. Spring Breakers: The Second Coming will reportedly feature none of the same cast members as its predecessor.
