Withstanding and overcoming in Mustang, Deniz Gamze Erguven's pretty little whirlwind of a film. It's a picture of pastel tones and shimmering sunlight, such that its coarser details might rupture the fabric all the more devastatingly; similarly, its protagonists are as slender and as lithe as they are young and innocent, such that that coarseness might make the same mark upon them. Erguven sacrifices innovation for honesty, but, in her twin virtues of insight and empathy, creates something close to genuine innovation: a portrait of people that is frank and unambiguous yet never straightforward nor simplistic. It never even courts such qualities until the closing sequences, though their more urgent tenor is thoroughly earnt, and supplies Mustang with a jolt of dramatic drive that helps give the film a sense of shape and purpose. Alas, that flighty flippancy is concurrently lost, thus perhaps betraying the sense of shape that it arguably had in largely not having one at all. Mustang is no dreamy, dithery dirge, though - it's shot through with vibrancy and verve, manifesting in myriad ways. There's powerful, palpable anger, then the frustration at its suppression. There's humour, in moments of charming cheek or in scenes of outright silliness. There's buoyancy and uplift, even in times when it's not entirely appropriate - a central theme of this film, the strength of these young women in withstanding and overcoming. Even in its occasionally underwhelming slightness, the result is a most fulfilling joy.

MARGUERITE AND MY GOLDEN DAYS LEAD CESAR NOMINATIONS
It's France, so what else did you expect? Festival titles dominate the nominations for the 41st Cesar Awards, with Xavier Giannoli's Marguerite and Arnaud Desplechin's My Golden Days - Venice and Cannes debuts respectively - dominating the field with 11 mentions apiece. Voters were clearly of similar minds this year, as a hefty six films scored more than seven nominations: Cannes Palme d'Or recipient Dheepan and Oscar-nominated Mustang both secured nine, while Emmanuelle Bercot stars in Mon Roi and directs Standing Tall, both up for eight awards. But listen up: what a thrillingly diverse selection! Three of the Best Film nominees feature people of colour in leading roles! Three of them are directed by women; all of those women are also competing for the Best Director award! There are more leading women among the Best Film nominees than men! Two women are nominated for Best Cinematography, an award which no woman has ever been up for at the Oscars! The annual ceremony will this year be held on the 26th of February. Paolo Sorrentino's Youth leads the European Film Award nominations for 2015 with five mentions. After an impressive, diverse slate of winners in the technical categories, EFA voters skewed somewhat more mainstream with their main category nominations; less-hyped titles still managed to break through, though, such as Grimur Hakonarson's Cannes award-winning Rams for Best European Film and Romanian Oscar entry Aferim! for Best Screenplay. TRAILER: DENIZ GAMZE ERGUVEN'S MUSTANG
Ngl, this was on my watchlist for the London Film Festival, and was one of my biggest disappointments when it failed to turn up there. Deniz Gamze Erguven's debut feature film as director, Mustang, drew raves from critics at Cannes, where it premiered in May to award-winning success. It has since gone on to earn a healthy reputation on the festival circuit: more positive responses at Venice and Toronto festivals surely helped contribute to Mustang securing France's bid for the Foreign Language Film Oscar this year, over titles such as Palme d'Or winner Dheepan from Jacques Audiard, and Cannes Best Actor winner The Measure of a Man from Stephane Brize.
