AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS
Jeff Cronenweth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Emmanuel Lubezki (The Tree of Life)
Robert Richardson (Hugo)
Guillaume Schiffman (The Artist)
Hoyte van Hoytema (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)
A few things: hats off to the ASC. They were supposed to announce yesterday, then it was to be tomorrow, but now that they've finally decided, their slate looks rather impressive. I'm particularly pleased by the nominations for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - both fab cinematography which I thought might be overlooked. Also pleasing is Emmanuel Lubezki's nomination - sure, he's been winning all around him since the season got underway, but this is (extraordinarily) The Tree of Life's first guild nomination. Richardson and Schiffman are more conventional choices, but I'm surprised to see Janusz Kaminski for War Horse left out. Kaminski is revered by cinematographers worldwide, so this is a surprising omission. But if it can make way for Tinker Tailor and Dragon Tattoo, so be it. This does put War Horse in an even worse position though - snubbed by the DGA, SAG, WGA, ADG and now the ASC. Dragon Tattoo, meanwhile, continues to lap up guild nominations.
