DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA NOMINATIONS

Best Director
Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris)
David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist)
Alexander Payne (The Descendants)
Martin Scorsese (Hugo)

Now this was unexpected. Many thought Woody Allen would make it alongside dead certs Hazanavicius, Payne and Scorsese, although I wasn't so sure. It seems now, though, that with PGA, DGA, SAG and WGA nominations for Midnight in Paris, it's going to be a very big presence in this year's Oscar race. Traditionally, the Academy rather likes Woody Allen too, so things are looking up for that film. Things, however, are looking very down for The Tree of Life. I still think that the Academy will respond well to it, but I thought the same thing about the guilds, and it hasn't picked up a single guild nomination yet - not from the VES or ADG even. An ASC nomination is obviously on its way, but that may be it.

But today's biggest winner is definitely The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. When it was announced as one of PGA's top ten, I thought it was an anomaly. It was, however, a sign of things to come. It has now been recognised by PGA, WGA and, most importantly of all, now the DGA. With potentially (and probably) more than five films up for Best Picture this year, it can hardly miss out. The DGA are, as they have almost always been, the best Oscar precursor, or at least the most accurate, and this applies to both Best Picture and Director. They are very rarely any less than 4/5 correct in correlating with both of those categories. In practical terms, Dragon Tattoo is in. After all that...!
