DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA WINNERS

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film
Ben Affleck (Argo)

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary

Malik Bendjelloul (Searching for Sugar Man)

As many had predicted, Argo continues its sweep of the major guilds, with only WGA and ACE to seal the deal. This is only the third time in the history of the DGA that they have chosen a winner not nominated for the Oscar - previously, Steven Spielberg won for The Colour Purple and Ron Howard won for Apollo 13 - both popular directors making a name for themselves as serious directors for perhaps the first time, both surprisingly snubbed by the Academy, as Affleck has been. Neither of those films went on to win the Best Picture Oscar though, and The Colour Purple went home empty-handed in the end, despite 11 nominations, setting a record thus. Malik Bendjelloul's win is equally as expected. Nominations can be found here (feature films) and here (documentaries).
