OBIT - MEL SMITH


Acclaimed comedian Mel Smith died yesterday, Friday the 19th of July, of a heart attack. The 60-year-old British writer, actor and director had been beset by health problems in years of late. On TV, he was best known for popular sketch show Not the Nine O'Clock News. His film career as an actor was limited, but as director he made such films as The Tall Guy, with Jeff Goldblum, Bean, starring Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean, and High Heels and Low Lifes, with Minnie Driver.
