19 FILMS ADVANCE IN THE OSCAR ANIMATED FEATURE RACE

High-profile, big-budget, American animated fare goes up against the exact opposite in the Oscar Animated Feature race. And the animation branch of the Academy does like to choose a variety of films for their nominations. So what'll make the cut this year? Not all of these films have had their one-week LA qualifying run yet, so they better get to it sharpish! I thought Ernest & Celestine was a delight when I saw it earlier this year, and I sure hope it gets nominated. And, ofc, I hope Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises does too, and I can hardly wait to see the master's final film (supposedly, since it's not his first of those!). Here are the 19 films in this year's race:

  • The Apostle
  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
  • The Croods
  • Despicable Me 2
  • Epic
  • Ernest & Celestine
  • The Fake
  • Free Birds
  • Frozen
  • Khumba
  • The Legend of Sarila
  • A Letter to Momo
  • Monsters University
  • Planes
  • Puella Magia Madoka Magica the Movie Part III: The Rebellion Story
  • Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury
  • The Smurfs 2
  • Turbo
  • The Wind Rises

My predicted five would be The Apostle, Ernest & Celestine, Frozen, Monsters University and The Wind Rises. But ask me again in two months, obvs!

  1. Despicable Me 2 giant BO earnings is bound to be in the conversation. Prequel didn't make it in top 5, though.
Hoping The Wind Rises shines Miyazaki's name one last time at Oscars.
Pixar and Disney are just cashing the checks with their features lately with producing sequels and more sequels.

    1. I think Despicable Me might have made it in were there five nominations in its year, but there were only three. But looking at the Academy's history, it seems they like to nominate a variety of types of film, and I wonder if Frozen and Monsters University might take up the high profile American blockbuster slots. Particularly given the fact that, despite Despicable Me 2's better box office than its predecessor, it's not nearly as good a film!
