The international cultural community and cineastes the world over have been left devastated by the loss of a man who was not only one of the leading figures in contemporary cinema, but one of the leading figures in cinema history. At age 91, Alain Resnais died yesterday, Saturday the 1st of March 2014. Through the 1950s and '60s, he directed some of the seminal artistic works the medium has seen, such as his 1955 documentary short, Night and Fog, and features such as 1959's Hiroshima Mon Amour and 1961's Last Year at Marienbad. These, among others, will be remembered as some of the greatest films of the 20th Century, as indeed they already are. His latest film, Aimer, Boire et Chanter, won Resnais two major awards at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, including the FIPRESCI Prize. He is survived by his widow and sometime colleague, actor Sabine Azema. This is an enormous loss for those who were acquainted with the New Wave filmmaker, and also for those acquainted with his work.
