Rio 2 placed first on Friday, suggesting that the family film might win the weekend, as families tend to turn out in greater forces on Saturday and Sunday than on weekdays. But Captain America: The Winter Soldier rallied to the top spot, winning out $41.3 million to $39.3. But, like Captain America last weekend, Rio 2's start proved an increase over its franchise predecessor, though not by nearly as great a percentage - it only added an extra $100k. Other openings were more modest: well-reviewed horror movie Oculus with $12 million in third place, and poorly-reviewed sports movie Draft Day with $9.8 million in fourth. The highest-placed limited opener was Joe in 31st, but Only Lovers Left Alive was far more impressive in 33rd, in a twelfth as many theatres. Of the others, only The Railway Man could crack the Top 40, and only barely - even Cuban Fury's almost-moderate release couldn't, while Hateship Loveship's one-theatre release was hampered by its day-and-date VOD start. Back up top, the only film not to see an expansion in its screen count to lose less than 50% of its weekend-on-weekend takings. The Raid 2 and Under the Skin each grew considerably and entered the Top 20, though Under the Skin's $309k was comparatively more impressive than The Raid 2's $957k in over three times as many cinemas.
