A recent pick, but one that's hard to argue with. From forgotten semi-stars of days gone by, to bit part players old and young, to moderately well-known TV faces, to local non-actors, the cast of Alexander Payne's Nebraska was the usual eclectic mix for the journeyman director, in another of his terrific portraits of small town America. But this ensemble was his best yet, in the acting, in the directing, and in the casting. John Jackson far outdid his good work on Payne's last two films, Sideways and The Descendants with this array of the perfect faces in the perfect parts, and in the perfect film to show off what they're capable of. A film which has been subjected to increasing criticism since its awards success a few months back, I hold steady to my claim that it's Alexander Payne's best yet, and the tip-top casting is one of the principle reasons for that.
