After a long career as both film director and action director of much acclaim in China, Yuen Wo Ping made a major crossover to the mainstream international market with 1999's The Matrix. Having worked through decades of advancement in the martial arts, Yuen was undoubtedly the right person to choreograph the action in Wong Kar Wai's ultimate martial arts biopic, The Grandmaster. The variety and the complexity of his action direction is impeccable, and surpasses even his justly famous recent work on films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and both of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films.
