I didn't like Gareth Evans' sadistically brutal The Raid, and I liked his tiresome sequel The Raid 2 earlier this year even less. But both films feature extremely strong tech specs in two regards: crisp sound design and outstanding fight choreography. The stunt work is utterly gobsmacking, with the initial film, set in a crime-run tower block under attack from a small police squad, taking the biscuit. Actors Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian (who has a starring role in the sequel) have designed stunts of a level of danger and a level of extremity unseen in films up to this point. The intricacy and imaginativeness of their design has no peer. These otherwise pretty terrible films, obsessively violent and horribly scripted, are of little value other than their action choreography. But what great value Ruhian and Uwais' contribution in this respect has.
