Ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, Open Road Films has acquired Jon Stewart's directorial debut Rosewater for U.S. distribution. Stewart took a break from hosting his popular TV programme The Daily Show last summer to film the adaptation of BBC journalist Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy's book Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival, concerning Bahari's time spent being blindly interrogated in an Iranian prison for four months, during which time his captors cited a The Daily Show appearance that Bahari had made as evidence of his connection to Western spies. OddLot financed the film, for whom Sierra / Affinity acts as exclusive sales agent; they'll be handling international sales in Cannes. Gael Garcia Bernal stars as Bahari.
