Neighbours out-performed based on expectations over the weekend, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed. Expectations were spot on, though, that Nick Stoller's comedy would beat Spider-Man to the box office top spot for the weekend: $49 million to $35.5 million (down a very steep 61% on its opening) was a bigger beating than most had predicted. Neighbours was a thoroughly different beast from the weekend's other two wide releases, yet neither of them proved successful counter-programming: Moms' Night Out could have done a little better over Mothers' Day weekend, making a fine $4.3 million, while Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return could hardly have done any worse, making a dismal $3.7 million. Meanwhile, Moms' Night Out's christian rival Heaven is for Real dropped just 13% on last weekend (is it on its way to a surprising $100-million-plus total?!), and Legends of Oz's, Rio 2, only 34.8%. Granted, it was only Spider-Man and Brick Mansions that experienced a major tumble within the Top 15. Jon Favreau's Chef opened to a tasty $204k debut in six theatres, with the not-dissimilar God's Pocket, from John Slattery, to a significantly smaller $21k in three. And while Gia Coppola's debut, Palo Alto, made a smart smart, Richard Ayoade's The Double failed to bank on the star power of its lead actors, and flopped in limited release.

It was a big start for Neighbours, but expect Godzilla to be even bigger next weekend. Disney could have a surprise sleeper hit on their hands with Jon Hamm sports drama Million Dollar Arm also.
