Curiosity surrounds Ryan Gosling's Lost River, not least because it's his first film as director or writer. It's billed as a fantasy-thriller that Gosling himself pitches as somewhere between two former directors of his, Derek Cianfrance and Nicolas Winding Refn. It stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Doctor Who's Matt Smith, Gosling's partner Eva Mendes and Ben Medelsohn, and is set to premiere a week today (the 20th of May) in the Un Certain Regard sidebar of Cannes.
