DALLAS-FORT WORTH FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION AWARDS: MOONLIGHT WINS FOUR

Barry Jenkins' Moonlight continues to stake its clear case as the North American critics' favourite film of 2016, with four wins from the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association. The coming-of-age drama has had virtually no trouble in winning over those same Southern critics who, last year, balked a little at doing the same for Todd Haynes' Carol. Their ranked choices below:

SAN DIEGO FILM CRITICS SOCIETY NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

How's about this for some variation? Last year's San Diego Film Critics Society nominees disclosed a particularly unsurprising factor about cultural tastes behind the Orange Curtain with their dismissal of Carol; not so this year, as Moonlight is present and correct, though alongside a host of fellow contenders whose inclusion likely hadn't been forecast. The SDFCS will announce its award winners on the 12th of December - two days from now.

CAHIERS DU CINEMA CROWNS TONI ERDMANN THE BEST FILM OF 2016

The leak was correct! Cahiers du Cinema, that most prestigious of centres of film criticism, has unveiled its choices for its ever-anticipated year-end poll, and they're precisely as yesterday's leaked list suggested. It looks like failing to win over George Miller's Cannes jury might have been the best thing to happen to Maren Ade's Toni Erdmann, as it can add first place on this poll to its already-hefty roster of accolades, including a FIPRESCI Grand Prix. Indeed, the entire top seven here is comprised of Cannes competition entries, not one of which claimed a jury award at the festival in May.
