SPIRIT AWARDS 2016: MOONLIGHT SWEEPS THE DAY

Good for you, Film Independent. Just pretty good pretty much all around. Moonlight wins six Spirit Awards, amounting to every last one of its nominations, leaving precious little room for its competitors to garner anything - only one other, Manchester by the Sea, sneaks in anywhere. MOONLIGHT AND ARRIVAL TAKE WGA HONOURS

Sorry, Lion! Alas, Luke Davies' script wasn't eligible for the Writers Guild of America awards, and also I'm totally not sorry. But a tremendous coup for Moonlight, as its standing in the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race only improves with a win in Original Screenplay with the WGA. Indeed, with yet another contender to fend off this weekend in the Adapted victor here, Arrival, Barry Jenkins' groundbreaking drama nevertheless becomes an even stronger candidate by beating presumed frontrunners La La Land and Manchester by the Sea. LA LA LAND AND MOONLIGHT LEAD 2016 CRITICS' TALLY NOMINATIONS!

The Screen On Screen Critics' Tally nominations are announced! Compiled from the full range of awards and polls posted here on SOS through awards season, with points values assigned to placements and multipliers assigned to specific groups, these nominations across 16 categories represent the critical consensus for the best of 2016. La La Land and Moonlight lead the pack with nine nominations apiece, and the Best Picture lineup is strong on films that are popular across the board, save one surprise inclusion. EIGHT CHLOTRUDIS NOMINATIONS FOR MOONLIGHT

Trust the Chlotrudis Society to champion diversity once again, as representation remains the buzzword among awards groups. SAG AWARDS: HIDDEN FIGURES WINS ENSEMBLE CAST!

You didn't see this coming, did you? With La La Land out of the way, the Ensemble award from the Screen Actors Guild was perceived by most to be a race between almost any of the nominees, though few predicted Hidden Figures, not least with its lack of wins in the individual categories. Alas, this likely only strengthens La La Land's Oscar potential, given that its closest rival, Moonlight, continues to lose the big guild awards. A largely predictable SAG ceremony was closed out by two big shockers, in the Ensemble Cast choice and in a surprise pick for Lead Actor  - Denzel Washington in Fences, winning alongside his costar Viola Davis.
