Emmanuelle Riva's performance in Michael Haneke's Amour is the work of a lifetime. And that's not just to say that it's the best performance of her career - which it is - but also to say that, contained within her immensely deep and detailed characterisation of Anne is an entire lifetime of emotion, specifically of pain and of love. It's an incredibly harrowing portrayal of life, death and love, and certainly one of the screen's finest acting performances from one of its most iconic actors.
