LA LA LAND LOSES TO ARRIVAL IN IFMCA'S 2016 AWARDS

Refrained from posting these nominations when they were announced for various reasons, but none of those reasons apply now that the International Film Music Critics Association has revealed its award winners for 2016. Although La La Land, heavily favoured to win both music Oscars tonight, wins three awards, the most of any film or composer, it's Johann Johannsson's Oscar-disqualified score for Arrival that wins the top award, and deservedly so! MOONLIGHT AND ARRIVAL TAKE WGA HONOURS

Sorry, Lion! Alas, Luke Davies' script wasn't eligible for the Writers Guild of America awards, and also I'm totally not sorry. But a tremendous coup for Moonlight, as its standing in the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race only improves with a win in Original Screenplay with the WGA. Indeed, with yet another contender to fend off this weekend in the Adapted victor here, Arrival, Barry Jenkins' groundbreaking drama nevertheless becomes an even stronger candidate by beating presumed frontrunners La La Land and Manchester by the Sea. LA LA LAND WINS FIVE BAFTAS

...so not a sweep. 5/11. That's less than The Artist, actually. Up to a point, La La Land had actually tied several other films as the runners-up in awards count, as non-Best Film nominee Lion was, for most of the evening, the only film to have claimed more than one prize. But Damien Chazelle's musical took four top awards to bring its tally to five - less than most had predicted, though far more than any other film this year from BAFTA, given their eagerness to spread the wealth. ASC AWARDS GREIG FRASER IN SURPRISE RESULT

It was all going La La Land's way this awards season en route to Oscar glory, until the American Society of Cinematographers rang in. Long-underappreciated DP Greig Fraser wins the ASC's top award for Lion in a remarkable coup - many thought he wouldn't even be nominated - as Garth Davis' debut feature film continues to pick up goodwill with awards voters and audiences alike. Don't expect him to surprise at Oscar - that's probably still La La Land's - but this is a pleasant victory for Fraser and his film nonetheless. And an excellent choice in the Spotlight category too. SAG AWARDS: HIDDEN FIGURES WINS ENSEMBLE CAST!

You didn't see this coming, did you? With La La Land out of the way, the Ensemble award from the Screen Actors Guild was perceived by most to be a race between almost any of the nominees, though few predicted Hidden Figures, not least with its lack of wins in the individual categories. Alas, this likely only strengthens La La Land's Oscar potential, given that its closest rival, Moonlight, continues to lose the big guild awards. A largely predictable SAG ceremony was closed out by two big shockers, in the Ensemble Cast choice and in a surprise pick for Lead Actor  - Denzel Washington in Fences, winning alongside his costar Viola Davis. LA LA LAND EQUALS OSCAR NOMINATION RECORD

The sensible few among us didn't show much sense after all - La La Land snags a bizarre and unwarranted Sound Editing nomination to bulldoze its way to a record-equalling 14 Oscar nominations. Its shock success isn't the only one among this year's Academy Awards slate, as Moonlight pretty much maxes out with eight mentions, while select figures such as Mel Gibson, Isabelle Huppert and Ruth Negga receive credit too. Alas, there are the usual losers, including a couple of significant snubs for Best Picture and Director nominee Arrival (including Amy Adams, sadly), and a near-total shut-out for Silence, unforgivably. The 89th annual Academy Awards take place just over a month from now, on the 26th of February.
