Refrained from posting these nominations when they were announced for various reasons, but none of those reasons apply now that the International Film Music Critics Association has revealed its award winners for 2016. MOONLIGHT AND ARRIVAL TAKE WGA HONOURS

Sorry, Lion! Alas, Luke Davies' script wasn't eligible for the Writers Guild of America awards, and also I'm totally not sorry. But a tremendous coup for Moonlight, as its standing in the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race only improves with a win in Original Screenplay with the WGA. Indeed, with yet another contender to fend off this weekend in the Adapted victor here, Arrival, Barry Jenkins' groundbreaking drama nevertheless becomes an even stronger candidate by beating presumed frontrunners La La Land and Manchester by the Sea. And deservedly, too. All the details of the film award nominees at this link, and the winners below.

Best Original Screenplay
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight)

Best Adapted Screenplay
Eric Heisserer - based on the story Story of Your Life by TEd Chiang (Arrival)

Best Documentary Screenplay
Robert Kenner, Brian Pearle, Kim Roberts and Eric Schlosser - based on the book Command and Control by Eric Schlosser (Command and Control)

ACE EDDIE WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

Arrival wins in the Drama category, beating La La Land's only viable Oscar competition, Moonlight. Check out all the winners below, and the ACE Eddie nominations here.

LA LA LAND EQUALS OSCAR NOMINATION RECORD

The sensible few among us didn't show much sense after all - La La Land snags a bizarre and unwarranted Sound Editing nomination to bulldoze its way to a record-equalling 14 Oscar nominations. Its shock success isn't the only one among this year's Academy Awards slate, as Moonlight pretty much maxes out with eight mentions, while select figures such as Mel Gibson, Isabelle Huppert and Ruth Negga receive credit too. Alas, there are the usual losers, including a couple of significant snubs for Best Picture and Director nominee Arrival (including Amy Adams, sadly), and a near-total shut-out for Silence, unforgivably. SILENCE MAKES SOME NOISE WITH DENVER FILM CRITICS SOCIETY

See? Some people like it! Martin Scorsese's Silence irrefutably deserves better than it's getting from voters in an awards season whose mad rush to declare with haste above all else has prevented some of 2016's latest-breaking films from claiming nominations for year-end awards. The Denver Film Critics Society is here to remedy things for this most brilliant film, which takes its rightful place alongside fellow Best Picture nominees such as Arrival and Moonlight. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA LEADS VANCOUVER FILM CRITICS CIRCLE NODS

Half way through December, it's somewhat remarkable that this hasn't happened yet - Manchester by the Sea leads the slate with a critics group at last! It certainly helps that the Vancouver Film Critics Circle doesn't vote on tech categories, where films like La La Land and Arrival have often dominated. We await award winners in the international races on the 20th of December and in the domestic races on the 9th of January.

ARRIVAL OUT, LA LA LAND IN - OSCAR-ELIGIBLE ORIGINAL SCORES

Colour me deeply unimpressed with the Academy's music branch once again. In their seemingly arbitrary process of determining which submitted scores from the year in film are eligible for nomination, they've deemed Johann Johannsson's outstanding work from Arrival not to fit the criteria due to the sparing use of existing Max Richter pieces, yet have deemed Justin Hurwitz's work from La La Land to indeed fit them, despite the existence of a separate category for musicals that is supposed to render them ineligible for this award. Another Oscar to which La La Land is set to undeservedly cruise. Oscar nominations are due on the 24th of January.
