HELLO DESTROYER DESTROYS VFCC'S CANADIAN AWARDS

The Vancouver Film Critics Circle may announce its international awards via press release earlier in the season, but it announces its domestic awards in a gala ceremony in January each year. This year's top winner was Hello Destroyer, claiming an impressive five wins. You can check out the VFCC's nominations here.

VANCOUVER FILM CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS: MANCHESTER BY THE SEA WINS FIVE

For a film that's looking at possibly earning five Oscar nominations total, five awards from one group alone isn't a bad haul! Manchester by the Sea misses in a mere single category with the Vancouver Film Critics Circle's international awards, leaving precious little room for any of 2016's other critical hits to get a look in. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA LEADS VANCOUVER FILM CRITICS CIRCLE NODS

Half way through December, it's somewhat remarkable that this hasn't happened yet - Manchester by the Sea leads the slate with a critics group at last! It certainly helps that the Vancouver Film Critics Circle doesn't vote on tech categories, where films like La La Land and Arrival have often dominated. We await award winners in the international races on the 20th of December and in the domestic races on the 9th of January.

VFCC VOTES SPOTLIGHT BEST FILM OF 2015

The Vancouver Film Critics Circle has spoken, and chimed in with their counterparts across North America by declaring Spotlight the Best Film of 2015. Their uncontroversial choices include a Best Actor win for Steve Jobs' Michael Fassbender and a Best Actress win for Brie Larson in Room; Lenny Abrahamson's film is nominated in six categories with the VFCC's Canadian awards, the winners of which are due to be revealed at a ceremony on the 6th of January. ROOM LEADS VANCOUVER FILM CRITICS CIRCLE NOMINATIONS

Being both a Canadian production and one of the best-reviewed films of the year, Lenny Abrahamson's Room was the obvious choice to claim the most nominations from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle this year. Despite missing out on Best Film or Director nods (though it received them in the Canadian categories), overall the film received eight mentions. Filling out the VFCC's top three films of the year were Mad Max: Fury Road, Spotlight and The Revenant, whose profile continues to rise as awards season progresses.
