LA LA LAND WINS FIVE BAFTAS

...so not a sweep. 5/11. That's less than The Artist, actually. Up to a point, La La Land had actually tied several other films as the runners-up in awards count, as non-Best Film nominee Lion was, for most of the evening, the only film to have claimed more than one prize. But Damien Chazelle's musical took four top awards to bring its tally to five - less than most had predicted, though far more than any other film this year from BAFTA, given their eagerness to spread the wealth. LA LA LAND LEADS BAFTA NOMINATIONS

BAFTA chimes in on awards season 2016-17, rather unwelcomely in this writer's opinion. La La Land leads the pack, predictably, with 11 nominations, but a number of flunks across the board take a less predictable route toward spoiling the set - Aaron Taylor-Johnson once again gets into Best Supporting Actor over Michael Shannon for Nocturnal Animals, Martin Scorsese's Silence shows up not once, and Barry Jenkins misses a Best Director nod for Moonlight. Indeed, Moonlight notches up a mere four mentions. The BAFTAs are held on the 12th of February.

FIVE BAFTAS FOR THE REVENANT ON THE ROAD TO OSCAR

The Revenant took one step further still to Oscar victory with yesterday's BAFTAs. Five awards for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's western, though Mad Max: Fury Road put up a show of strength in the tech categories, where it claimed four. Brits Mark Rylance and Kate Winslet won in the supporting acting categories, putting each of them in a strong position to upset Oscar frontrunners Sylvester Stallone and Alicia Vikander two weeks from now. BRIDGE OF SPIES AND CAROL ARE SHOCK LEADERS OF BAFTA NOMINATIONS

This awards season just won't sit still! Prior to today's BAFTA nominations announcement, one might have expected Mad Max: Fury Road or The Martian to lead; instead, all films trail none other than current awards season punching bag Carol and outside contender Bridge of Spies, both of which make nine appearances! And next in line is The Revenant with eight mentions! There were major absentees too, such as Spotlight's Tom McCarthy missing out on a Best Director nod; that was taken by Ridley Scott for The Martian, though its six nominations do not include one among the Best Film top five. And Mad Max is entirely absent from all above-the-line categories, just in case the Carol sweep was too much good news for one day. It was a highly surprising slate, then, and one which promises more surprises to come, both in the BAFTA race and in the Oscar race overall. Winners will be revealed on the 14th of February. 2015 BAFTA RISING STAR NOMINEES

Ahead of Friday's BAFTA nominations, those in line for this year's Rising Star award have been announced. Five up-and-coming actors have been selected for the special BAFTA category, which is voted upon by the British public. It's a neat move by the British Academy, inviting public sentiment to play a part in their annual choice of award winners, though some questionable local picks in the past have inspired a more recent shift toward international stars, as BAFTA tries to maintain its relevance on a global scale.
