PGA NOMINATIONS MAKE THINGS WORSE

Was there any need for this? Sure, Deadpool isn't a bad film, and sure, Silence probably never stood a chance given Paramount's release and campaign strategies. But rly, PGA? Always doing the most to do the worst. We also now have the official credits for the documentary nominations, which were announced in November, and five animated nominees additionally. The 28th of January is the date for this year's PGA awards. Couldn't give the tiniest fuck rn.

2016 PGA DOCUMENTARY NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

The Producers Guild of America is one of those daft institutions that likes to get in there early with its year-end nominations, at least for documentaries. They've overlooked Ava DuVernay's acclaimed 13th, which may be for distribution reasons, or it may be a surprise snub - the PGA is known for that in this category. On the 10th of January, the lists for all films and for animated films will be announced, and the award winners will be revealed for all categories at the ceremony on the 29th of January. SPANNER, MEET WORKS: THE BIG SHORT WINS PGA

Here's the confirmation you needed - this Oscar race could go any which way from here. Beating Critics' Choice champ Spotlight and Golden Globe winner The Revenant, The Big Short takes the top prize from the Producers Guild of America. It's an important win for the film, as it failed - like last year's winner, Birdman - to win the Comedy / Musical Globe earlier this month, and because no PGA winner has missed the Best Picture Oscar since the two groups simultaneously expanded their lineups and adopted a preferential ballot seven years ago. It's not like the Producers Guild of America has that much agency. Look at the ten films they chose as the best of the year: any of these titles really that out of the blue? Anything you haven't seen anywhere else? So just what is it that inspires them to snub the New York Film Critics Circle's Best Picture of 2015, the critics groups and polls' third favourite according to SOS' Critics' Tally, the highest-rated English-language film of the year on Metacritic, Carol? Do we think the PGA voters are a little bit narrow-minded? A little bit wary of something? A little bit homophobic, maybe? Is that what we think? PGA BEST DOCUMENTARY NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

So this is it... sort of. The Producers Guild of America is one of the most prestigious film industry guilds in the world, and they unofficially kicked off awards season 2015-16 today with the announcement of their Documentary Theatrical Motion Picture nominees. Acclaimed titles all five of them, with some high profile names among them. They'll reveal their nominees for other categories, alongside the specific credits for this category, on the 5th of January, and their awards ceremony will take place on the 23rd of January.
