MAD MAX: FURY ROAD WINS FIVE SOS CRITICS' TALLY AWARDS!

Nearly three months after the first critics group announced its choices, here are the results of the 2015 Screen On Screen Critics' Tally. Carol claims the most nominations with eight, but wins none, as the competition is steamrolled by Mad Max: Fury Road, which wins five of seven nominations. Of the five films nominated for Best Picture, only three appear on Oscar's list of eight, and neither The Big Short nor The Revenant, each tipped to win Oscar's top award by many pundits, appear here. The only category to perfectly match the Academy's is Leading Actor, where Eddie Redmayne secures a nomination for The Danish Girl despite his co-star Alicia Vikander missing; never mind, she wins the Supporting Actress award for Ex Machina. These awards were devised by assigning point values to awards and polls from critics groups, with more influential groups carrying greater values to less influential ones.

THE BIG SHORT WINS THE 2015 USC SCRIPTER AWARD

Not much to report here. One award went to one film that no-one doubted would win. Adam McKay and Charles Randolph have won the USC Scripter award for their adaptation of Michael Lewis' book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine. The great thing about this award is that the person responsible for the winning screenplay's original source (since this is an award for adapted works only) also wins, so Lewis can claim the prize too. If this meant another step forward in the Oscar campaign for anything but The Revenant, I'd be much happier, but since The Big Short was wholly expected to triumph here, let's say this is, at least, not a step backward. Check out the Scripter nominees here.

DIVERSITY DOMINATES AT SAG AWARDS; SPOTLIGHT WINS ENSEMBLE CAST

We have ourselves an Oscar race! The feeling that The Big Short could have the Best Picture category locked down after its PGA award a week ago was upset tonight by closest rival Spotlight's Ensemble Cast prize at the Screen Actors Guild awards. SAG rarely gives this award to a film that doesn't win one of its four individual acting categories, but this was far from the biggest surprise of the evening: Idris Elba's Supporting Actor win for Beasts of No Nation (one of two for Elba, including a TV award for Luther) makes him the first person in history to win a SAG award for film without a corresponding Oscar nomination. Pair that with the fact that only one TV award for which no POC were nominated went to a white person, and you have quite the statement to the Academy... Check out SAG's film nominations here, and their film awards below:

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Brie Larson (Room)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture

ACE EDDIE AWARDS: MAD MAX AND THE BIG SHORT ADVANCE IN OSCAR RACE

It was a done deal, lbr. Hank Corwin for The Big Short and Margaret Sixel for Mad Max: Fury Road both won ACE Eddie awards yesterday, cementing their position as joint frontrunners in the Oscar Best Editing race. That award will be tougher to call, though, with potential spoiler The Revenant right at their heels. Check out the American Cinema Editors' nominations at this link, and their winners below:

Margaret Sixel (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy)

SPANNER, MEET WORKS: THE BIG SHORT WINS PGA

Here's the confirmation you needed - this Oscar race could go any which way from here. Beating Critics' Choice champ Spotlight and Golden Globe winner The Revenant, The Big Short takes the top prize from the Producers Guild of America. It's an important win for the film, as it failed - like last year's winner, Birdman - to win the Comedy / Musical Globe earlier this month, and because no PGA winner has missed the Best Picture Oscar since the two groups simultaneously expanded their lineups and adopted a preferential ballot seven years ago. Check out the PGA nominees at this link, and the award winners below:

The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures
The Big Short (Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt)

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures
Inside Out (Jonas Rivera)

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures
Amy (James Gay-Rees)

Here are the results of Artios Award voting by the Casting Society of America. Seven categories, seven different winners as no film was eligible to compete in more than one field. Check out the CSA's nominations for 2015 here, and their award winners below:

2015 OSCAR NOMINATIONS ARE ABOUT AS SHIT AS YOU EXPECTED, YEP

On the bright side, there were 10 nominations for Mad Max: Fury Road, recognitions for World of Tomorrow, When Marnie Was There, Carol in Adapted Screenplay, The Look of Silence in Documentary, Theeb in Foreign Language Film, Charlotte Rampling in Actress for 45 Years, and Tom Hardy... but for The Revenant. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's latest pile of expensive, deeply dissatisfying movie masturbation leads the nominations with an outrageous tally of 12; double that of Carol, which is left off the Best Picture list. And thus, onto the dark, dark side of these Oscar nominations: no POC in the acting categories for the second consecutive frame, no women directors represented in either Picture or Director, no Carol nor Cinderella in Production Design, no Inside Out in Picture nor Original Score (I mean, not even in Original Score?!), and Spectre's utter dirge of a theme song is nominated for Original Song. Fuck this shit. The Oscars are on the 28th of February. Roll on March!
