ACE EDDIE WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

Much as La La Land's victory at the American Cinema Editors awards was wholly expected, it was another film's success that has perhaps cemented its position as the undisputed Oscar frontrunner of the season - a frontrunner of the kind of stature that we haven't known for many years. Arrival wins in the Drama category, beating La La Land's only viable Oscar competition, Moonlight. Check out all the winners below, and the ACE Eddie nominations here.

SCHOONMAKER SNUBBED AT 2016 ACE EDDIE NOMINATIONS

One must simply assume that voters in the American Cinema Editors were not treated - and it certainly is a treat - to screeners of Martin Scorsese's Silence, as the legendary Thelma Schoonmaker fails to make their Drama nominations this year. Otherwise, no big surprises here. ACE Eddie voters - get thee to an arthouse, and write Mrs. Powell's name in this day! Awards will be announced and presented on the 27th of January.

ACE EDDIE AWARDS: MAD MAX AND THE BIG SHORT ADVANCE IN OSCAR RACE

It was a done deal, lbr. Hank Corwin for The Big Short and Margaret Sixel for Mad Max: Fury Road both won ACE Eddie awards yesterday, cementing their position as joint frontrunners in the Oscar Best Editing race. ACE EDDIE NOMS - SPOTLIGHT'S (FIRST?) BIG MISS

Editing is one of the four main pillars of the Oscar race when it comes to determining which film wins Best Picture, alongside directing, acting and writing. You generally need to turn up in all four of those in order to be considered a legitimate candidate to win. Last year, Birdman became the first film to win the top Oscar with no corresponding Editing nod since Ordinary People in 1980. No film has won Best Picture without a nomination from the American Cinema Editors since Driving Miss Daisy in 1989, back when it only nominated three non-documentary titles per year. Could Spotlight be the first since then? This definitely isn't a stat you'll wanna stand too firmly behind, but it's notable that this is Spotlight's first significant disappointment, and the first chink in its armour. It joins all other Oscar contender now in having missed at least one major marker on the road to Best Picture victory. From an Oscar watcher's perspective, this could be a significant moment in the race, the point where this year becomes no longer a one-horse race, and a complete free-for-all. Or, Spotlight could go on to bulldoze the competition all season long from hereon out. ACE Eddie winners will be announced on the 29th of January.
